Chipping

The short lofted shot played from near the green to get the ball rolling toward the hole.

Skill

Overview

Chipping covers the short shots played from just off the green, where the ball is lifted briefly into the air and then allowed to run out toward the hole. It sits between a full swing and a putt, and it is the shot most often needed when an approach finishes close but not on the putting surface.

The stroke is compact and controlled. Because the ball spends more time rolling than flying, judging the landing spot and the amount of run is usually more important than generating height.

Key points

  • A chip flies a short way and rolls the rest — pick a landing spot, not just a target.
  • Different clubs produce different flight-to-roll ratios from the same swing.
  • Keeping the hands ahead of the clubhead helps the club make contact with the ball first.
  • Chipping is played from a narrower stance and a shorter swing than a full shot.
  • It is one of the quickest areas to improve because the movement is small and repeatable.
