Overview
A golf course is a sequence of holes laid out across open ground. Each hole starts at a marked teeing area and finishes at a hole cut into a closely mown putting green, with a mown fairway between them, longer rough alongside, and hazards such as bunkers, trees and water placed to make route choice matter.
Full courses are typically eighteen holes, with nine-hole and shorter par-3 courses common for casual play and for learning. Because the ground is played as it is found, no two courses — and no two days on the same course — present quite the same problem.
