Golf tee
A small peg pushed into the ground to raise the ball for the first shot on a hole.
Overview
A tee is a short peg, usually wooden or plastic, pushed into the turf to hold the ball slightly above the ground. It is allowed only for the first stroke on each hole, played from the marked teeing area.
Raising the ball lets the club reach it cleanly on a slightly upward path, which is what makes a driver work as intended. Tee height is adjusted for the club being used: higher for a driver, lower for an iron.
Good to know
- A tee may only be used for the first stroke on a hole.
- Tee height is set to suit the club: higher for a driver, lower for an iron.
- Raising the ball lets the club strike it on a slightly upward path.
- Tees are cheap and easily lost, so players usually carry several.
