Corrections policy
What we correct, how we mark it, and what does not count as a correction.
How we correct
When a story is wrong, we change it and we say so. Corrections appear on the story itself, in a labelled block, with the date and what changed — not on a separate page that nobody visits. The story's update date changes at the same time, and its structured data carries the correction so that machines reading the page see it too.
What gets a correction note
- Anything that changes the meaning of a claim: a wrong figure, a misdescribed rule, a mechanism explained backwards.
- A source that turns out not to support the claim attached to it.
- A misattributed image or an incorrect credit.
Fixing a typo, a broken link or a piece of formatting is not a correction and does not get a note. Recording those would bury the ones that matter.
Substantial rewrites
If a story needs more than a correction — if its argument no longer holds — we do not quietly rewrite it under the same headline. We say what changed and why, in the story.
