Where photography comes from
Journal photography is sourced from Wikimedia Commons and from public institutional archives, under public-domain dedications and Creative Commons licences that permit reuse. No image is taken from a general web search, a stock site we do not hold a licence for, or a social platform, and no editorial photograph on this site is AI-generated.
Licence, creator, source page and retrieval date are read from the source repository's own API at the moment a file is acquired, and stored with the image. Nothing in the credit lines below was typed from memory.
Files are hosted here
Every image is downloaded and served from this site rather than hot-linked. That keeps the page fast, keeps it working if the source repository is unavailable, and avoids consuming someone else's bandwidth to illustrate our pages.
What we photograph
Launch photography depicts surfaces, venues and equipment. No identifiable individual is the subject of an image on this site. That is a deliberate constraint rather than a coincidence: a photograph can be perfectly licensed and still be the wrong thing to publish because of who is in it, and until there is a process for checking that properly, the safer and more honest position is to photograph the places sport happens in.
