Poomsae (Forms)

Poomsae is taekwondo's forms discipline: a set sequence of blocks, kicks, and strikes performed in a fixed pattern and judged on accuracy, power, and presentation.

Overview

Poomsae is taekwondo's forms discipline: a prearranged sequence of blocks, strikes, and kicks performed against imaginary opponents in a fixed pattern.

Each pattern follows a set line of movement and a defined order of techniques, and practitioners are judged on accuracy, balance, power, rhythm, and overall presentation.

It is practised at every level and forms a core part of grading and belt progression, and is also contested competitively, both as recognised standard patterns and, in some events, as freestyle routines.

What defines it

  • Techniques are performed solo in a memorised sequence rather than against a live opponent.
  • Judging focuses on precision of technique, balance, timing, and the control and power shown in each movement.
  • Standard patterns are shared reference forms learned in order as a practitioner progresses through the belts.
  • Competitive poomsae can be performed individually, in pairs, or in teams.
  • Freestyle poomsae adds choreographed sequences, often including acrobatic kicks, set to the athlete's own arrangement.

Getting started

  1. 1Start with the first patterns taught at a taekwondo school, learning them one movement at a time.
  2. 2Focus on clean stances and correct technique before adding speed or power.
  3. 3Practise the sequence slowly and repeatedly to commit the pattern to memory.
