Overview

Seam movement happens at the bounce. A ball that lands on its raised seam meets the surface on a ridge rather than on smooth leather, and the resulting deviation sends it off its original line after pitching.

This is the distinction that most casual cricket writing loses. Swing is curvature through the air and is visible before the ball lands; seam is deviation at the bounce and is visible after. A bowler can do both, but they are produced by different things.

Why seam movement is less controllable than swing

A swing bowler chooses a direction by angling the seam. A seam bowler cannot choose: which way the ball deviates depends on exactly how the seam meets the surface and on what the surface is like at that spot.

That unpredictability is the weapon. A batter facing a swing bowler can play for the movement; a batter facing a seam bowler landing the ball consistently on the seam cannot, because neither of them knows which way the next one will go.

What the pitch contributes

Seam movement depends on the surface as much as the bowler. A pitch with moisture or grass in it grips the seam and deviates the ball more; a dry, worn surface offers less at the seam and more to spin.

This is why the same bowler can look unplayable on one ground and ordinary on another, and why captains think hard about conditions at the toss. It is also the honest limit on any general claim about seam: the bowler supplies a consistent seam position, and the pitch supplies the rest.

Length matters more than for swing

Deviation at the bounce only troubles a batter if there is not enough time to adjust after it. A seam bowler therefore aims a length that makes the batter commit before the bounce — full enough that the batter must play forward, short enough that they cannot get to the pitch of it.

That narrow band is what cricket calls a good length, and it is specific to the bowler and conditions rather than a fixed distance from the stumps.

How to do it

  1. 1Grip the ball with the first two fingers either side of the seam, thumb resting beneath.
  2. 2Keep the wrist firmly behind the ball so the seam stays upright.
  3. 3Release so that the seam stays vertical rather than wobbling in flight.
  4. 4Aim for a length that forces the batter to commit forward before the bounce.
  5. 5Repeat the same seam position rather than trying to choose a direction of movement.
  6. 6Read the surface: expect more from a fresh or grassy pitch than a dry, worn one.
