The rugby union ball

Overview
A rugby ball is oval and made of four panels. Its shape is not decoration: it is what makes a rugby pass a spiralled sideways action rather than a throw, and what makes the bounce unpredictable enough to be a tactical factor in its own right.
Law 2 sets the ball at 410–460 g. Its air pressure at the start of play is 65.71–68.75 kilopascals, which the Law also expresses as 0.67–0.70 kilograms per square centimetre or 9.5–10.0 pounds per square inch.
Materials and grip
The ball is made of leather or a suitable synthetic material, and may be treated to make it water-resistant and easier to grip. The pimpled surface of a modern ball is a direct consequence of that permission.
Grip matters more in rugby than in most ball sports because the ball is handled in contact, in rain, and by players whose hands are occupied a moment earlier. A ball that cannot be held one-handed cannot be offloaded.
Smaller balls are permitted
Law 2 allows match organisers to permit smaller balls. This is the same pattern seen across the Laws: World Rugby sets the adult specification and delegates the age-grade variation to whoever is running the competition.
It is worth stating plainly because a smaller ball is often described as a departure from the Laws when it is in fact provided for by them.
