Ski boots

Stiff moulded boots that lock into ski bindings and transmit the rider’s movements to the skis.

Equipment

Overview

Ski boots are deliberately stiff. A hard outer shell with an inner liner clamps around the foot and lower leg, so that small movements of the ankle and shin are passed straight through to the ski rather than being absorbed.

That is why fit matters more than almost anything else in ski equipment: a boot that is too loose loses the connection, and one that is painfully tight ruins a day. Boots are the item hire shops spend most time on, and the item experienced skiers most often buy first.

Good to know

  • Stiffness is the point: it transmits ankle and shin movement to the ski.
  • Fit matters more than any other single equipment choice on snow.
  • Boots clip into the binding at both toe and heel.
  • Many skiers buy boots before buying skis, and hire the skis.
