Court speed and the ITF Court Pace Rating

How tennis surface speed is actually measured — the ITF Court Pace Rating and its five categories — and why "clay is slow and grass is fast" is a description rather than an explanation.

Overview

Tennis surfaces are routinely described as fast or slow, but the ITF measures pace rather than asserting it. The Court Pace Rating is a number, and surfaces are classified into five categories by where they fall on it.

A Court Pace Rating of 0 to 29 is Category 1 (slow pace). 30 to 34 is Category 2 (medium-slow). 35 to 39 is Category 3 (medium). 40 to 44 is Category 4 (medium-fast). 45 or more is Category 5 (fast).

What the categories actually contain

Examples that conform to Category 1 (slow) include most clay courts and other types of unbound mineral surface. Examples conforming to Category 3 (medium) include most acrylic coated surfaces plus some carpet surfaces.

Note the hedging in the ITF's own language: "most" clay courts, "most" acrylic surfaces. Surface type is a strong predictor of category, not a definition of it. A court is classified by measurement.

The surface types the ITF classifies

The ITF classifies surfaces by description: Acrylic/Polyurethane is a textured, pigmented, resin-bound coating. Artificial clay is a sand-dressed and/or rubber-dressed surface with the appearance of clay. Artificial grass is a synthetic surface with the appearance of natural grass. Asphalt is bitumen-bound aggregate and concrete is cement-bound aggregate.

Carpet is textile or polymeric material supplied in rolls or sheets of finished product. Clay is unbound mineral aggregate. Grass is natural grass grown from seed. Hybrid clay is a clay-dressed system supported by a carpet matrix. All surfaces may be porous or non-porous.

Why the mechanism matters more than the label

A surface changes a bounce in two ways at once: how much horizontal speed the ball loses through friction, and how much vertical bounce it retains. Those are different properties, and a surface can be slow in one and not the other.

This is why a high-bouncing clay court and a low-bouncing grass court play so differently even where their pace ratings are closer than expected, and why a player's preference between surfaces is rarely explained by pace alone. Unbound mineral aggregate also moves underfoot, which is why sliding is possible on clay and is a technique in its own right.

Tolerances the ITF specifies for construction

The ITF also publishes construction tolerances by surface family. Evenness is specified at 6 mm for acrylic/polyurethane and for asphalt/concrete families, and 8 mm for artificial clay, artificial grass, carpet and hybrid clay.

Maximum slope is 1:100 (1.00%) for acrylic/polyurethane, 1:120 (0.83%) for the artificial surface family, and 1:200 (0.50%) for asphalt and concrete. Planarity is specified as ±15 mm from true over the Principal Playing Area and ±30 mm over the Total Playing Area.
