Why tennis footwork is mostly about getting back rather than getting there — the split step, the recovery position that is not the centre of the court, and sliding on clay.
Overview
Most tennis coaching about movement focuses on reaching the ball. The harder and more decisive half is recovery: where a player goes after hitting, and how quickly they get there.
A player who reaches every ball but recovers poorly is beaten by the second shot of every pattern. A player who recovers well turns a defensive position back into a neutral one.
The split step
The split step is a small hop timed so the player lands as the opponent strikes the ball. Landing at that moment unweights the feet and lets the first step go in either direction without a preparatory movement.
It happens before every shot, not just on the return. A player who stops split-stepping during a long rally loses a fraction of a second on every ball, which compounds across the point.
Recovery is not to the centre
The instinct is to return to the centre mark. The correct position is the bisector of the opponent's two best angles — the midpoint between the widest shot they can hit to each side from where they are standing.
When an opponent is wide on one side, their best angles are skewed, so the bisector is not the centre of the court. A player recovering to the centre mark against a wide opponent is leaving more court open on one side than on the other.
Sliding, and where it is available
On clay — an unbound mineral aggregate — the top layer moves under the foot, which allows a player to slide into a shot and then push out of the slide to recover. This converts what would be a deceleration into a change of direction.
Sliding on hard courts is done by some players, but the mechanism is different: a hard court does not move, so the slide comes from the shoe surface rather than the court surface. It is best treated as a distinct skill rather than the same technique transferred, and it is not a universal recommendation.
