Golf Full Swing

The complete rotational swing used for tee shots and longer approach shots, from setup through backswing to a balanced finish.

Technique

Overview

The full swing is golf’s signature movement: a coiling turn away from the target, then an unwinding turn back through the ball. Power comes from the sequence — the ground, hips, torso, arms and finally the clubhead — rather than from the arms swinging harder.

Setup does much of the work. Grip, stance width, ball position and posture are all set before the club moves, and a swing that starts from a poor setup usually has to make a compensation somewhere later.

How to do it

  1. 1Set your grip, then take a stance with the ball positioned for the club you are using.
  2. 2Settle into posture with a slight knee flex and the weight balanced through your feet.
  3. 3Turn your torso away from the target, letting your arms and the club follow the turn.
  4. 4Start down by turning your lower body toward the target before the arms swing through.
  5. 5Swing through the ball and hold a balanced finish facing the target.

Key points

  • Power is sequenced from the ground up, not generated by the arms alone.
  • Ball position moves forward in the stance as the club gets longer.
  • A balanced finish is a reliable sign the swing stayed in control.
  • Tempo repeats better than maximum effort.
