Positions & roles

Definition

In rugby, the scrum-half is the player who connects the forwards and the backs, putting the ball into the scrum and collecting it as it emerges. They also clear the ball quickly from rucks and mauls, deciding whether to pass, kick or run and setting the tempo of the attack.

The role calls for a fast, accurate pass, sharp awareness and constant communication with team-mates. Scrum-halves are usually involved in play very frequently, making them a key organising voice around the breakdown.
