Ball control

The skill of receiving and settling the ball quickly so it is ready to use.

Skill

Overview

Ball control, sometimes called first touch, is how a player takes a moving ball under command in one action. A clean first touch sets up the next pass, shot or dribble; a poor one gives possession away.

It is one of the most fundamental skills in football and futsal because every possession begins with receiving the ball, often while under pressure from an opponent.

Key points

  • A good first touch cushions the ball and directs it into useful space.
  • Receiving with the surface facing where you want to go saves a second touch.
  • Controlling the ball away from a nearby defender buys time and protects possession.
  • A relaxed contact absorbs pace better than a stiff, firm one.
  • Reliable control under pressure is what separates confident players from rushed ones.
