Badminton Clear

An overhead stroke that sends the shuttlecock high and deep to the opponent's back court, resetting the rally or buying time.

Technique

Overview

The clear is a fundamental badminton stroke played from an overhead position to push the opponent to the rear of the court. A defensive clear is hit high to gain recovery time, while an attacking clear is flatter and faster.

It relies on a full overhead throwing action with a strong forearm rotation and wrist snap at contact.

How to do it

  1. 1Move behind the shuttle and turn your non-racquet side toward the net.
  2. 2Raise the racquet into a throwing position behind your head.
  3. 3Rotate your forearm and swing up to meet the shuttle at full reach.
  4. 4Snap through contact to send the shuttle high and deep.
  5. 5Recover back toward the centre of the court.

Key points

  • Get behind the shuttle so you can hit it in front of your body.
  • Power comes from forearm rotation, not a big arm swing.
  • Contact the shuttle at the highest comfortable reach.
