Rock Climbing discipline
Speed Climbing
A timed format where climbers ascend a route as fast as possible, most recognizably as a head-to-head race on a standardized competition wall.
Overview
Speed climbing is about ascending a route in the shortest possible time, turning climbing into a race rather than a test of maximum difficulty.
In its standardized competition form, two climbers race side by side on the same fixed route, so the result comes down to who reaches the top first.
Because the route layout is kept consistent for competition, athletes rehearse and memorize an exact sequence of moves and refine it for pure speed.
What defines it
- The goal is to reach the top as quickly as possible, usually in a head-to-head race format.
- The standardized competition route keeps the holds in the same positions, so climbers can practice a repeatable sequence.
- Explosive, precise movement and a well-drilled sequence matter more than working out unfamiliar moves.
- Climbers are kept secure by a rope or auto-belay system while they race upward.
- It is one of the recognized competition climbing disciplines and is judged purely on time.
Getting started
- 1Building general climbing comfort and coordination usually comes before focusing on speed.
- 2Practicing a set route repeatedly helps climbers smooth out and memorize the sequence.
- 3Trying the standardized speed route at a wall that offers it is a common way to start.
