Footwork

The coordinated foot movements and patterns that position the body correctly to execute a skill under time pressure.

MovementAlso known as: footwork patterns

Definition

Footwork is the system of steps a player uses to move efficiently and arrive balanced at the ball or target. Common patterns include the split-step and side-shuffle in racket sports, the chassé and crossover steps, defensive slides in basketball, and the small adjusting steps that set the feet before a shot or stroke. Good footwork means getting into position early so the upper-body technique can be executed calmly.

It is often called the hidden half of technique: strokes, shots, and passes break down not because the hands fail but because the feet arrive late or unbalanced. Drills such as ladder work, cone patterns, and shadow movement build the specific stepping patterns each sport rewards. Footwork underpins stance, balance, weight transfer, and recovery between actions.
