Full-court press
An aggressive basketball defence that pressures the ball across the whole court to force turnovers.
Overview
The full-court press extends defensive pressure across the entire court immediately after a score or turnover, harassing the ball-handler from the inbound pass onward rather than waiting to defend near the basket.
It aims to speed opponents up, force rushed passes and create turnovers that lead to quick baskets. The trade-off is fatigue and the risk of giving up easy scores if the press is beaten with a well-timed pass.
Key points
- Pressure begins the moment the ball is inbounded, not at the halfway line.
- It can be played man-to-man or as a full-court zone to trap the ball.
- Traps in the corners force the ball-handler into a hurried pass.
- The goal is to force turnovers and speed the opponent into mistakes.
- Beating the press with one accurate pass can create an easy scoring chance.

Strategies
- Attacking vs Defensive BalanceThe overarching choice a team or athlete makes about how much to commit to creating scoring chances versus avoiding conceding, and when to shift it.
- Controlling TempoControlling tempo is the strategy of dictating the pace and rhythm of play — speeding up or slowing down — to suit your strengths and unsettle opponents.
- Zone vs Man MarkingTwo defensive systems compared: zonal marking guards areas of the field, while man-to-man marking assigns each defender a specific opponent to track.
- Transition PlayTransition play is the strategy of switching quickly between attack and defence the moment possession changes, exploiting the opponent's brief disorganisation.
- Building momentumMomentum is the sense that a contest is flowing one side's way — building it means stacking positive plays while working to interrupt an opponent's run.
Player roles
- Ball-winnerA ball-winner is the player tasked with regaining possession through pressing, tackling and interceptions — a team's tireless defensive workhorse.
- All-RounderAn all-rounder is a versatile player who contributes across attack and defence rather than specialising in a single phase, position, or skill.
Rules
- Backcourt violationA basketball rule breach for returning the ball into a team's own defensive half after it has crossed into the attacking half.
- TravelingA basketball violation for moving illegally with the ball without dribbling it.
- Out of boundsThe rule that a ball or player leaving the marked playing area is out of play and possession is decided at the boundary.
- Double dribbleA basketball violation for dribbling with two hands at once, or for dribbling again after picking up the ball.
- GoaltendingA basketball violation for interfering with a shot while the ball is on its downward path to the basket or above the rim.

Sports communication
- Defensive communicationTalking and signalling on defence — organising who marks whom, calling switches and warning teammates — to stay coordinated without the ball.
- Transition communicationCommunicating in the fast switch between attack and defence — flagging a turnover, a counter or a break so teammates react together.
- Calling for the ballLetting a teammate know you are open and want the pass — usually a short, clear call made at the right moment.
