Man-to-man marking

A defensive approach where each defender is assigned to guard one specific opponent throughout play.

Definition

Man-to-man marking, sometimes called player-to-player marking, means every defender tracks a single opponent, staying close to limit their space and options. When that opponent moves, the defender generally moves with them.

It is used across many team sports, including football, basketball and netball. The approach can apply tight pressure on individual attackers, but it relies on each defender winning their personal duel and can be stretched by clever movement or screens.
